Hello students and parents,
We are requesting that ALL students bring in their OWN over-sized paint shirts for use in the art room.
This is now a requirement for all students in grades K-5.
Please send an old over-sized t-shirt with your child to school. They will keep the art shirts in their own lockers (or cubby) and wear to art on their art day.
Sincerest thank you, in advance, for your support
~Mrs. Susa

Special Message From Mrs. Susa, December 2014
Dear Art Students, Families & Friends:
As you are aware by now I have been on maternity leave since August. I apologize for not updating you sooner, and for not keeping up on the art blog with more information until now. Other than spending all of my time with my amazing little boys I have no real excuse. This time has flown by and I miss all of your little faces and your excitement I see when we engage in art experiences!
Many of you have seen the pictures of my new baby, Brady I had Mrs. Barnett post for me outside of my classroom. I wanted to share a couple more pictures of him (and Luke!) here today. They are doing really well, Luke has become a wonderful big brother and Brady is already almost five months old!
So that there are no surprises I also wanted to take this time to let all of you know that my family and I have made the decision for me to take the rest of this year and stay home with my boys. Originally, I had planned to come back in January. It is the best decision for us at this time and I am forever grateful to be home with Brady for his first year (and Luke too, of course!)

I will not be back to the art room to teach until August 2015. I am looking forward to a new year and hoping that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your families too. Please keep up the awesome work for Mrs. Barnett that I know you are doing! She keeps me informed of all the projects and how much you are all learning. Have a spectacular year!!

Mission, Vision, Values CHARACTERS Update (4th Grade)
4th graders have been hard at work selecting values, studying facial expressions, practicing gesture drawings, and learning how to shade to create form all in an effort towards becoming awesome cartoonists! We have been working with Arts In Stark again this year to create clever cartoon characters that will represent our district's mission, vision and values. Each character represents one of our district's "RICHER" values: Respect, Integrity, Citizenship, Honesty, Everyone is a Unique Individual, and Responsibility. I wanted to showcase a few of the students' work while in progress and one of the bulletin boards I have on display that features one of the creative activities we completed: Our cartoon expression templates.

4th GRADE is "RICHER" Learning Through our Mission, Vision, Values
MISSION,
VISION, VALUES: “RICHER”
COMMUNITY
ART PROJECT with ARTS IN STARK
Fourth grade artists are
brainstorming during art class to aide them in the development of our “RICHER”
comic book heroes. Each student is working towards a deeper understanding of
Lake Local School’s district values during Art, Guidance and Language Arts
classes. Lake Local’s Mission, Vision, Values are remembered more easily for
students through the use of the acronym “RICHER”. Our values are Respect,
Integrity, Citizenship, Honesty, Everyone as a Unique Individual and
Responsibility. Through this study, all fourth grade artists will be encouraged
and supported in the creation of a new super hero that represents one of these
distinct values.
Many of our younger students do
not yet understand what each of our district values actually mean, so we
started with identifying and defining each of them during art class. We would
like our students to be more aware of the core values for the district, but
also use what they are learning in art and Guidance to support the Language
Arts Common Core standards and objectives.
We have taken this unique
opportunity with Arts In Stark and district’s funding to create a more vested
interest and understanding of the district’s values for our students. I am absolutely thrilled to be working in collaboration with
Arts In Stark, a non-profit organizational campaign, who supports the arts in
our area schools.
Beginning with a unique graphic organizer, students were
divided into groups to further examine each of the values. We had students enlarge a modified copy of the smaller group work to a
poster size which they will take back to their classrooms for display. In
collaboration with classroom teachers, students will begin work on the creation
of a “character map” that will identify their character’s traits such as what
they think, stand for, look like and feel. By first creating and utilizing a
character map that focuses on the traits, characteristics, and goals, students
will begin the first stages in creation of a visually expressive super hero
based on the district’s values in art class.

Through our brainstorming
sessions, students have identified and named sources for art making ideas (e.g.
self, environment, and other people) that yielded many guidelines, ideas, and
conceptual decisions for their upcoming “RICHER HERO” project. The students
also generated ideas for discussing and assessing works of art with peers and
teachers during art class.
We are so fortunate to be in this
partnership with AIS because generally due to a lack of funding, most
schools do not have the kind of support and eagerness to feature special shows
and projects exclusively through the Arts for their students. Over the past few
years we have been able to bring in a wide range of enthusiastic, and uniquely
talented, artistically and musically inclined guests. As the year unfolds, we are looking forward to sharing
these unique experiences with the community along the way. Again, we are grateful to
be working with AIS and plan for this year to be incredibly memorable for
our students and our community.

4th GRADE ART
OP ART PROJECTS:
Fourth grades artists were amazed by the style of art called OPTICAL Illusions. Inspired by artist, Briget Riley, famous for her bold, black and white contrasting optical illusions, students tried their steadiness at control of the Sharpie art medium and advanced their drawing skills through the use of repetition. Op artists utilize repetition of shapes
and lines to create the illusion of rhythm and movement across the canvas.
Perceiving &
Knowing (2PE): The student identified and visually described different visual effects
resulting from art making techniques by illustrating VALUE, SPACE, CONTRAST,
LINE, and VARIETY.
Producing &
Performing (1PR): The student identified, selected, and varied art materials, tools, and
processes to achieve the desired result of illusion, rhythm, movement, or form
in their artworks.
Producing
& Performing (3PR): The student generated ideas and employed a variety of strategies to
solve the visual problem of illustrating optical illusions.

ELEC and FRIENDS ANTI-BULLYING ART ASSEMBLY Lake Elementary
On May 7th students in Kindergarten to fifth at Lake and Hartville Elementary schools were awed by the powerful presence of Elec and Friends and our anti-bullying assembly. This entire year of art classes have been dedicated to learning about other cultures around the world through our art theme: ART BEYOND BORDERS. In addition, our focus has been learning about tolerance, respect and acceptance; about doing what you can with your own two hands to make this world a better place. This performance was made possible through our Lake Elementary and Arts In Stark SmARTs Partnership with funds from their annual arts campaign. We wish to thank our wonderful friends at Arts In Stark and our amazing administration for helping us find the funds to bring these awesome events, projects and experiences to our art students.
At the beginning of the assembly, students watched Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's music video, My Own Two Hands. This set the tone for Elec and Friends Anti-bullying performance. Elec Simon hails from Canton and has performed live with the Off Broadway show, STOMP for several years. He also performs for many of the First Friday events in Canton, Ohio. After introducing himself and his mission, Elec began by sharing a very tragic and personal story of the loss of his best friend at the age of eleven due to being bullied. Students and teachers watched as Mr. Elec and his band demonstrated that "NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR MUSIC!"
Elec performed his drumbeats all over the gymnasium and even on a pair of crutches... |
