Hello students and parents,
We are requesting that ALL students bring in their OWN over-sized paint shirts for use in the art room.
This is now a requirement for all students in grades K-5.
Please send an old over-sized t-shirt with your child to school. They will keep the art shirts in their own lockers (or cubby) and wear to art on their art day.
Sincerest thank you, in advance, for your support
~Mrs. Susa

Special Message From Mrs. Susa, December 2014
Dear Art Students, Families & Friends:
As you are aware by now I have been on maternity leave since August. I apologize for not updating you sooner, and for not keeping up on the art blog with more information until now. Other than spending all of my time with my amazing little boys I have no real excuse. This time has flown by and I miss all of your little faces and your excitement I see when we engage in art experiences!
Many of you have seen the pictures of my new baby, Brady I had Mrs. Barnett post for me outside of my classroom. I wanted to share a couple more pictures of him (and Luke!) here today. They are doing really well, Luke has become a wonderful big brother and Brady is already almost five months old!
So that there are no surprises I also wanted to take this time to let all of you know that my family and I have made the decision for me to take the rest of this year and stay home with my boys. Originally, I had planned to come back in January. It is the best decision for us at this time and I am forever grateful to be home with Brady for his first year (and Luke too, of course!)

I will not be back to the art room to teach until August 2015. I am looking forward to a new year and hoping that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your families too. Please keep up the awesome work for Mrs. Barnett that I know you are doing! She keeps me informed of all the projects and how much you are all learning. Have a spectacular year!!

Hello Students!! Hope you're staying warm and having fun.Wanted to pass on this special note regarding BLIZZARD BAGS for LAKE LOCAL SCHOOLS. A Blizzard bag plan for my ART CLASSES will be posted and/or shared with students upon return to school....later this week or next. Stay tuned...
In a special morning session, the Lake Board of Education has passed a resolution authorizing the development and implementation of an online learning plan allowing students of the district to complete classroom lesson assignments up to the equivalent of three school days. The “Blizzard Bag” plan, as it is commonly referred to, is a provision the Ohio Legislative passed into law as Ohio Revised Code section 3313.88, specifying that schools may utilize this educational format for up to three calamity days beyond the standard five calamity days. The Board of Education met this morning, January 27, 2014.
The calamity day alternative make-up plan will go into effect upon Superintendent Jeff Wendorf’s declaration that Lake Local Schools will utilize the plan for the excess calamity days. Lake Local Schools are closed today, Monday January 27 and will be closed Tuesday January 28, 2014.
The blizzard bag requires each classroom teacher to develop lessons requiring equal or more instructional time that the student would receive for three school days in his or her teacher’s class. Lessons and assignments will be posted on teacher blogs, e-sites, or emailed to students consistent with the process teachers normally communicate assignments to students.
Students will be granted a two-week period from the date of the posting to complete the lesson. Students without access to a computer shall be permitted to complete the posted lessons at school after the reopening of school. Students will be provided paper copies of all material related to the assignments.
According to the Ohio Department of Education, blizzard bags may be used when necessary to close school due to: disease epidemic, hazardous weather conditions, law enforcement emergencies, inoperability of schools busses or other equipment, damage to a school building or other temporary circumstances due to utility failure rendering the school building unfit for school use.
Information will be posted on the district’s website and Facebook page should the blizzard bag policy be initiated. Parents will also be notified via the district’s telephone communication system.
The Lake Local Schools are committed to be the best organization for learning, providing education for success.

WELCOME BACK! Lets get this ARTY started!
Welcome back art students! We have our art room back together, and the first two weeks are under our belt, so...
Lets get this pARTy started!
During the introduction to art classes I shared with students that I helped to plan, create, and paint a mural in Akron, Ohio. I showed pics from this blog where I had posted the event back in June. I loved that the very next week one of my students came back to art class with a photo of himself in front of the mural I told them about!! I had to share...this is a kiddo after my own heart and I love that he wanted to share this with me. I posted his pic in the art room too. THANKS TOMMY!!
I am looking forward to much more planning, inspiring, and creating with all of my students...I am teaching at the middle school again (7th) and so I was unavailable to teach KDG and 1st with the way the schedule worked out.
2nd Grade will begin with "ART Fills You Up" cup paintings. This lesson is a quick review of the color wheel and tints. They will move onto Art and Culture next.
3rd Grade will begin with a very inspiring artist, Laurel Burch and her fabulous use of colors! This lesson will review color blending and overlapping with florescent paints and oil pastels pattern and designs.
4th Grade began with "collage selfies" on the front covers of their visual journals.
5th Grade began with a review of proportion and creating a pencil "selfie" on the cover of the cover of their visual journals.
7th Grade began their Visual Journal Study. They had a drawing challenge for the front cover of their journal. They had 30 minutes to create a WANTED POSTER design (student did self-portrait in pencil while also planning what they were wanted for!) They also painted a color wheel inside their journal to refer to this 6 weeks. They incorporated a study of tints, shades, neutrals, and skin tones. They are currently exploring tips and rules for creating a successful v/s an unsuccessful visual journal.

ELEC and FRIENDS ANTI-BULLYING ART ASSEMBLY Lake Elementary
On May 7th students in Kindergarten to fifth at Lake and Hartville Elementary schools were awed by the powerful presence of Elec and Friends and our anti-bullying assembly. This entire year of art classes have been dedicated to learning about other cultures around the world through our art theme: ART BEYOND BORDERS. In addition, our focus has been learning about tolerance, respect and acceptance; about doing what you can with your own two hands to make this world a better place. This performance was made possible through our Lake Elementary and Arts In Stark SmARTs Partnership with funds from their annual arts campaign. We wish to thank our wonderful friends at Arts In Stark and our amazing administration for helping us find the funds to bring these awesome events, projects and experiences to our art students.
At the beginning of the assembly, students watched Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's music video, My Own Two Hands. This set the tone for Elec and Friends Anti-bullying performance. Elec Simon hails from Canton and has performed live with the Off Broadway show, STOMP for several years. He also performs for many of the First Friday events in Canton, Ohio. After introducing himself and his mission, Elec began by sharing a very tragic and personal story of the loss of his best friend at the age of eleven due to being bullied. Students and teachers watched as Mr. Elec and his band demonstrated that "NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR MUSIC!"
Elec performed his drumbeats all over the gymnasium and even on a pair of crutches... |
