ALL ARTISTS NEED THEIR OWN ART SHIRTS FOR CLASS

Hello students and parents,
We are requesting that ALL students bring in their OWN over-sized paint shirts for use in the art room.

This is now a requirement for all students in grades K-5

Please send an old over-sized t-shirt with your child to school. They will keep the art shirts in their own lockers (or cubby) and wear to art on their art day.

Sincerest thank you, in advance, for your support
~Mrs. Susa

3rd GRADE ART

Mixed Media~ Fantastic Felines
Students were fascinated by the bright, whimsical paintings of artist, Laurel Burch. A self-taught artist and business woman, she became famous for her art and design in the 1970’s when she started creating metal jewelry on the back of an old frying pan and selling it on the streets of San Francisco. Later, Laurel Burch started to paint horses, tropical birds, and fantastic felines, all of which students and people everywhere have come to admire most. Students were also quite inspired by this artist when they learned she suffered from a rare bone disease that often left her hospitalized for months at a time. She never abandoned her art and worked through her pain. She wanted the world to feel the joy, and happiness her paintings conveyed.
See the beauty of her legacy below in my students' work...

Perceiving/Knowing (2PE) The student demonstrates skill in identifying relationships between and among selected elements and principles of art and design (ie., color, line, texture, space)
Perceiving/ Knowing (4PE): The student recognizes Laurel Burch as an artist who contributed to the cultural heritage of the people of the United States.
Producing/Performing (5PR): The student shows an increasing attention to the nuances of elements/ principles of design when creating personal works of art (ie., symmetry, repetition, and pattern)
Craftsmanship: The student successfully painted and applied oil pastel patterns, then outlined, cut and pasted neatly and completely with utmost attention to details.

ELEC and FRIENDS ANTI-BULLYING ART ASSEMBLY Lake Elementary

On May 7th students in Kindergarten to fifth at Lake and Hartville Elementary schools were awed by the powerful presence of Elec and Friends and our anti-bullying assembly. This entire year of art classes have been dedicated to learning about other cultures around the world through our art theme: ART BEYOND BORDERS. In addition, our focus has been learning about tolerance, respect and acceptance; about doing what you can with your own two hands to make this world a better place. This performance was made possible through our Lake Elementary and Arts In Stark SmARTs Partnership with funds from their annual arts campaign. We wish to thank our wonderful friends at Arts In Stark and our amazing administration for helping us find the funds to bring these awesome events, projects and experiences to our art students.

At the beginning of the assembly, students watched Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's music video, My Own Two Hands. This set the tone for Elec and Friends Anti-bullying performance. Elec Simon hails from Canton and has performed live with the Off Broadway show, STOMP for several years. He also performs for many of the First Friday events in Canton, Ohio. After introducing himself and his mission, Elec began by sharing a very tragic and personal story of the loss of his best friend at the age of eleven due to being bullied. Students and teachers watched as Mr. Elec and his band demonstrated that "NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR MUSIC!"

Elec performed his drumbeats all over the gymnasium and even on a pair of crutches...

Students were big fans of the show!

Mrs. Susa, Miss Stegner with Elec and Friends. These guys are truly amazing and have a strong message for students of all ages.

Lanterns created by 4th grade project: "LET YOUR INNER LIGHT SHINE" Students used a blue print, and discovered the differences between Form and Function in art. Student lanterns lined the entire entry hall to the gym, lighting their creative ways to the performance.

3rd Grade Explores Mondrian and Formalism

Third grade artists have been exploring the artistic style of Formalism in Art & Music, a style that focuses on the elements of art including shape, color, line, and texture. Exploring formalistic painter Piet Mondrian, we examined his interpretation of New York’s Broadway Avenue in his painting Broadway Boogie Woogie. The broad yellow lines depict the grid system from which the city is built. The primary colored squares represent  the flashing lights, glitter, and energy of New York City. (Special Thanks to Miss Stegner, for the write up here!)
In music class, Mrs. Deckerd shared the sounds of the time period, a small tribute to the Big Band Era, giving students their first impression of and a new appreciation for Jazz music. Mrs. Deckerd said, "Not only did they get to experience the music, they were able to play it themselves and compare it to Mondrian’s artwork- making connections across the spectrum!"
In art class, students worked their artistic skills up by incorporating the elements of art & horizontal and vertical lines into a new representation of Broadway Boogie Woogie!!

Lesson Covers NEW Ohio Art Standards Below:

Perceiving/Knowing (2PE): The student identified the relationships between and among selected elements of art and principles of design through the use of composition (balance) and space (cropping) of their vertical, horizontal, and perpendicular lines.

Producing/Performing (5PR): The student showed increasing attention to the nuances of the elements of art and principles of design through proper use of color families, line pattern, texture, shape, value, and balance when creating personal works of art.

Perceiving/Knowing (6PE):  The student recognized and identified choices that give meaning to a personal work of art through use of original, creative, and unique lines and shape patterns.
