ELEC and FRIENDS ANTI-BULLYING ART ASSEMBLY Lake Elementary

On May 7th students in Kindergarten to fifth at Lake and Hartville Elementary schools were awed by the powerful presence of Elec and Friends and our anti-bullying assembly. This entire year of art classes have been dedicated to learning about other cultures around the world through our art theme: ART BEYOND BORDERS. In addition, our focus has been learning about tolerance, respect and acceptance; about doing what you can with your own two hands to make this world a better place. This performance was made possible through our Lake Elementary and Arts In Stark SmARTs Partnership with funds from their annual arts campaign. We wish to thank our wonderful friends at Arts In Stark and our amazing administration for helping us find the funds to bring these awesome events, projects and experiences to our art students.

At the beginning of the assembly, students watched Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's music video, My Own Two Hands. This set the tone for Elec and Friends Anti-bullying performance. Elec Simon hails from Canton and has performed live with the Off Broadway show, STOMP for several years. He also performs for many of the First Friday events in Canton, Ohio. After introducing himself and his mission, Elec began by sharing a very tragic and personal story of the loss of his best friend at the age of eleven due to being bullied. Students and teachers watched as Mr. Elec and his band demonstrated that "NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR MUSIC!"

Elec performed his drumbeats all over the gymnasium and even on a pair of crutches...

Students were big fans of the show!

Mrs. Susa, Miss Stegner with Elec and Friends. These guys are truly amazing and have a strong message for students of all ages.

Lanterns created by 4th grade project: "LET YOUR INNER LIGHT SHINE" Students used a blue print, and discovered the differences between Form and Function in art. Student lanterns lined the entire entry hall to the gym, lighting their creative ways to the performance.

Watercolor Animals with Kinders!

"Octopus and Baby" By: Madison C.
While exploring a variety of art materials like pencils, oil pastels, and watercolor paints, Kindergarten artists examined simple shapes including squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles in animal photographs and uniquely illustrated picture books like those of Eric Carle.
After discussing and identifying many simple shapes they generated ideas and images for artwork based on their memory, imagination, and personal experience. I am currently exhibiting some of my kinders' watercolor animals. They are attracting quite a crowd! We hope you enjoy our work.

KDG Explores Art of Wassilly Kandinsky

In Kindergarten art we love teaching about artist Wassily Kandinsky and his ABSTRACT artwork. Introducing abstract art is fun because little artists love using their imagination to think up what they are seeing in the abstract. It is fun because there is no wrong answer and Kinders have the most amazing imagination! Kandinsky's paintings are a mixture of
line, shapes, & colors.

I point out how Kandinsky uses what they have previously learned about the PRIMARIES (red, blue, and yellow). Then students are encouraged to incorporate fancy overlapping lines (pencil first then trace with glue to dry) and what they know about repeating shapes to create their own "Abstract." Students are also encouraged to blend their primaries to find all the secondary colors during this process. Below are the state of Ohio's Art Content Standards for KDG that was assessed for this project.

Producing/Performing (3PR): The student discovered, selected, and combined art and design elements (LINE, SHAPE, COLOR, SPACE, & VARIETY) to communicate subject matter in various visual forms.

Responding/Reflecting (6RE): The student recognized and pointed out the similarities and differences between artistic styles of realism and abstracts then used that knowledge to create their own ABSTRACT.

KDG SHAPES BANNERS

I found this awesome little idea for studying shapes on a blog, then I blended it with another idea on Kandinsky from totally different blog. Kindergarten loved working together on this and they got many compliments on their banners on display in our cafeteria. It has since been moved to the other end of Lake Elementary for a safer viewing area. They can also now be seen from outside the windows by the large gym. Swing by and take a look!!

Kindergarten artists are exploring the Elements of Art, and in this activity, more specifically, SHAPE. Students examined simple shapes including squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. After pointing out subject matter and details observed in other artworks, students cooperated with peers to create these larger than life sized SHAPES banners. Kindergarten students are beginning to recognize and point out basic elements of art in their own artworks. While participating in this art-making experience, students used their new knowledge of these art elements to create fascinating lines, bright and vivid colors, and repeating shapes.
Students demonstrated other Principles of Design during this activity:
*OVERLAPPING *REPETITION  *RHYTHM
For our next project, students will be introduced to the Abstract art of
Wassily Kandinsky,
an artist known for his brilliant use of line, color, and interesting shapes.
