ALL ARTISTS NEED THEIR OWN ART SHIRTS FOR CLASS

Hello students and parents,
We are requesting that ALL students bring in their OWN over-sized paint shirts for use in the art room.

This is now a requirement for all students in grades K-5

Please send an old over-sized t-shirt with your child to school. They will keep the art shirts in their own lockers (or cubby) and wear to art on their art day.

Sincerest thank you, in advance, for your support

Special Message From Mrs. Susa, December 2014

Dear Art Students, Families & Friends:
As you are aware by now I have been on maternity leave since August. I apologize for not updating you sooner, and for not keeping up on the art blog with more information until now. Other than spending all of my time with my amazing little boys I have no real excuse. This time has flown by and I miss all of your little faces and your excitement I see when we engage in art experiences!
Many of you have seen the pictures of my new baby, Brady I had Mrs. Barnett post for me outside of my classroom. I wanted to share a couple more pictures of him (and Luke!) here today. They are doing really well, Luke has become a wonderful big brother and Brady is already almost five months old!

Brady is 4 months old for his first Christmas.

So that there are no surprises I also wanted to take this time to let all of you know that my family and I have made the decision for me to take the rest of this year and stay home with my boys. Originally, I had planned to come back in January. It is the best decision for us at this time and I am forever grateful to be home with Brady for his first year (and Luke too, of course!)

I will not be back to the art room to teach until August 2015. I am looking forward to a new year and hoping that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your families too. Please keep up the awesome work for Mrs. Barnett that I know you are doing! She keeps me informed of all the projects and how much you are all learning. Have a spectacular year!!

Honoring Lady Liberty

5th grade artists explored the grandeur of the Statue of Liberty, an emblem of peace and freedom in America. Mrs. Susa’s art classes revisited the history of the statue by visiting an virtual tour, and webcams discovering the many years it took to create the statue and why the copper she is made of has turned into the shade of green she is today. We learned that the copper has had a natural reaction to weathering over the last two hundred years. This weathering process created what is called a patina over the entire surface of Liberty. Did you know that Liberty is only as thick as two pennies placed face to face?
Lady Liberty is a sculpture so we visually examined a few tools they used in creating her. We also observed her from many unique perspectives which helped us in designing our own compositions. Students were encouraged to utilize artist tools such as cropping and enlarging during the creation process. To finish the background we included another American symbol of freedom, the flag. We learned how to shade and highlight it to make it look as those it is flowing in the wind.

Our music teacher, Mrs. Deckerd asked if we could display these artworks during their Veteran's Day musical in February. We were honored to share not only our super talented musically inclined students' achievements, but also our artistically inclined students got to share their work with the community of veterans during the show.

5th Grade Studies Contour Line and Other Art Elements in Nature

Nicholas displays his layering techniques with warm colors.
With the Autumn season going by so quickly I thought I would give students the opportunity to enjoy a closer look at the falling leaves. We brought in many of the most uniquely colored leaves we could find each day and began to focus on them as our new subject matter in Art.
Initially, we studied up on some relevant art terms that are associated with life drawing, such as composition (the way the artist arranges their subject matter in an artwork), scale (enlargement), contour line, (a.k.a. "perimeter" We talked about how a contour line of a shape is exactly like the perimeter of a shape in Math) and cropping (when a shape or object is extended off the edge of the picture plane. We further discussed other important elements of art: color, line, shape (organic and geometric), and value as they would relate to this project.
Jordan's leaves mirror image each other for a unique composition.

Students had the option of drawing a leaf or just using a photograph of a flower as their subject. I had students first focus on the quality of their lines as they drew the contours of their subject. Student objectives were to utilize the art tools of enlargement and cropping, tracing all vein details in sharpie pen, then finish with layering in color pencil. Layering in the color has been the most challenging for students because it takes more time, but I assure them it is worth it to see how realistic they can actually make something appear in the end.
Logan proudly displays his leaf trio.
Our second phase of the project will be to utilize bold, black lines patterns for the backgrounds to enhance and contrast with the colors of the leaves. Once they choose the background patterns, it will be a matter of putting the final touches on them with the addition of one final step I have not yet shared with them ...creating a 3D element to make their art POP!
I am looking forward to seeing these works on display in the coming weeks.

Karis works diligently on shadows for each specific line created for veins.

Art Content Standards for the Lesson/Project:
Producing and Performing (1PR) Students successfully integrated observational and technical skills to strengthen artmaking.
Producing and Performing (4PR) Students successfully selected and used the art elements and design principles to visually communicate understanding of an interdisciplinary concept. (Art and Science)

5th Grade ABSTRACT STELLA SCULPTURES

 FRANK STELLA
PAPER SCULPTURES
Artists enjoyed exploring the work of American, abstract artist, Frank Stella. His work transpired over years of building his shapes, and then painting them, cut, tangled, & mangled  and most of them, monumental in size, for all to enjoy. Today, Stella works in his huge studio in upstate New York at the age of 77. The artist says, “A sculpture is just a painting, cut apart and stood up somewhere.” After viewing many of Stella’s work on line, students marveled at his ability to paint shapes with lines, patterns and designs that seem to move and constantly interact and revolve around each other. Using tempera paints, we created an abstract style painting to mimic some of Stella’s ideals and concerns with motion and movement. We then overlay details and specific patterns with oil pastels, cut the painting into pieces and made it work together in a whole new visually exciting abstract sculpture.

Ohio Standards for Art Content:
Perceiving /Knowing (1PE): After exploration and production of abstract art, the student understands that the context of an art object has an effect on how that object is perceived.

Perceiving /Knowing (5PE): During class discussions/review, the student focused on selected artworks of artist, Frank Stella to help identify and pose questions about aesthetic qualities (sensory, organizational, emotional) in their own work.

Producing / Performing (4PR): The student successfully utilized the elements and principles: color, shape, space, value, repetition, movement, and rhythm in their abstract painting/sculpture.

Craftsmanship: The student created a 2 dimensional abstract painting by incorporating unique patterns and designs, then cut, and reorganized their abstract painted pieces neatly into a 3 dimensional work of art with structural integrity.

ELEC and FRIENDS ANTI-BULLYING ART ASSEMBLY Lake Elementary

On May 7th students in Kindergarten to fifth at Lake and Hartville Elementary schools were awed by the powerful presence of Elec and Friends and our anti-bullying assembly. This entire year of art classes have been dedicated to learning about other cultures around the world through our art theme: ART BEYOND BORDERS. In addition, our focus has been learning about tolerance, respect and acceptance; about doing what you can with your own two hands to make this world a better place. This performance was made possible through our Lake Elementary and Arts In Stark SmARTs Partnership with funds from their annual arts campaign. We wish to thank our wonderful friends at Arts In Stark and our amazing administration for helping us find the funds to bring these awesome events, projects and experiences to our art students.

At the beginning of the assembly, students watched Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's music video, My Own Two Hands. This set the tone for Elec and Friends Anti-bullying performance. Elec Simon hails from Canton and has performed live with the Off Broadway show, STOMP for several years. He also performs for many of the First Friday events in Canton, Ohio. After introducing himself and his mission, Elec began by sharing a very tragic and personal story of the loss of his best friend at the age of eleven due to being bullied. Students and teachers watched as Mr. Elec and his band demonstrated that "NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR MUSIC!"

Elec performed his drumbeats all over the gymnasium and even on a pair of crutches...

Students were big fans of the show!

Mrs. Susa, Miss Stegner with Elec and Friends. These guys are truly amazing and have a strong message for students of all ages.

Lanterns created by 4th grade project: "LET YOUR INNER LIGHT SHINE" Students used a blue print, and discovered the differences between Form and Function in art. Student lanterns lined the entire entry hall to the gym, lighting their creative ways to the performance.
