ELEC and FRIENDS ANTI-BULLYING ART ASSEMBLY Lake Elementary

On May 7th students in Kindergarten to fifth at Lake and Hartville Elementary schools were awed by the powerful presence of Elec and Friends and our anti-bullying assembly. This entire year of art classes have been dedicated to learning about other cultures around the world through our art theme: ART BEYOND BORDERS. In addition, our focus has been learning about tolerance, respect and acceptance; about doing what you can with your own two hands to make this world a better place. This performance was made possible through our Lake Elementary and Arts In Stark SmARTs Partnership with funds from their annual arts campaign. We wish to thank our wonderful friends at Arts In Stark and our amazing administration for helping us find the funds to bring these awesome events, projects and experiences to our art students.

At the beginning of the assembly, students watched Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's music video, My Own Two Hands. This set the tone for Elec and Friends Anti-bullying performance. Elec Simon hails from Canton and has performed live with the Off Broadway show, STOMP for several years. He also performs for many of the First Friday events in Canton, Ohio. After introducing himself and his mission, Elec began by sharing a very tragic and personal story of the loss of his best friend at the age of eleven due to being bullied. Students and teachers watched as Mr. Elec and his band demonstrated that "NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR MUSIC!"

Elec performed his drumbeats all over the gymnasium and even on a pair of crutches...

Students were big fans of the show!

Mrs. Susa, Miss Stegner with Elec and Friends. These guys are truly amazing and have a strong message for students of all ages.

Lanterns created by 4th grade project: "LET YOUR INNER LIGHT SHINE" Students used a blue print, and discovered the differences between Form and Function in art. Student lanterns lined the entire entry hall to the gym, lighting their creative ways to the performance.

SNEAK PEEK at 1st Grade KENTE CLOTH WEAVING

Students began their journey into printmaking and weaving this last week. Here are some photos of students working on weaving (AND RECYCLING!!) our Jackson Pollock splatter paintings!

First grade artists enjoyed the story,

The Spider Weaver by Margaret Musgrove.
The story introduces students to the legend of the Kente Cloth that originated in Africa. In African cultures weaving is a necessary part of everyday life. Students discovered symbols and meanings in Africa as well as some important concepts of weaving: warp, weft and loom.  Each of the students created their paper weave using shapes, lines and color to symbolize exciting patterns in art.

Here are a few of the finished works of art on display!

1st Grade CAVE ART

ART OF THE STONE AGE
1st grade artists enthusiastically practiced what they learned about the cave painters from thousands of years ago. After exploring the cave paintings of Lascaux, France through a virtual tour, students visualized that they had gone back in time! We turned out the lights, listened to sounds from inside the caves and used our fingers to paint. Students crumbled the brown butcher paper to make it have texture like a cave walls and then focused on painting animals they found. The earliest form of art, which has survived, is often referred to as “Cave Art.” It has been discovered all over the world from China to Australia. This type of art typically depicts animals, humans, weapons, and symbols and is seen only to have colors found in the natural environment.
This is the cave as it hangs in the stairwell entrance...looks pretty good with dimmed light above...gave it more ambience...

I think it helps to display pics of the students working during class with the actual work, brings the audience in even more!

We used charcoal pastels and paint in a natural color palette to create these on brown butcher paper.
