ALL ARTISTS NEED THEIR OWN ART SHIRTS FOR CLASS

Hello students and parents,
We are requesting that ALL students bring in their OWN over-sized paint shirts for use in the art room.

This is now a requirement for all students in grades K-5

Please send an old over-sized t-shirt with your child to school. They will keep the art shirts in their own lockers (or cubby) and wear to art on their art day.

Sincerest thank you, in advance, for your support
~Mrs. Susa

Special Message From Mrs. Susa, December 2014

Dear Art Students, Families & Friends:
As you are aware by now I have been on maternity leave since August. I apologize for not updating you sooner, and for not keeping up on the art blog with more information until now. Other than spending all of my time with my amazing little boys I have no real excuse. This time has flown by and I miss all of your little faces and your excitement I see when we engage in art experiences!
Many of you have seen the pictures of my new baby, Brady I had Mrs. Barnett post for me outside of my classroom. I wanted to share a couple more pictures of him (and Luke!) here today. They are doing really well, Luke has become a wonderful big brother and Brady is already almost five months old!

Brady is 4 months old for his first Christmas.

So that there are no surprises I also wanted to take this time to let all of you know that my family and I have made the decision for me to take the rest of this year and stay home with my boys. Originally, I had planned to come back in January. It is the best decision for us at this time and I am forever grateful to be home with Brady for his first year (and Luke too, of course!)

I will not be back to the art room to teach until August 2015. I am looking forward to a new year and hoping that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your families too. Please keep up the awesome work for Mrs. Barnett that I know you are doing! She keeps me informed of all the projects and how much you are all learning. Have a spectacular year!!

Australia~ A Cultural Experience

Second Grade Artists Encounter Australia

Second grade artists at Hartville Elementary studied, extensively, the culture of Australia during the creation process of their most current painting. Our paintings were inspired by all of the Australian painting techniques we discovered during the experience which last nine weeks. Little artists created a modern twist on the “X-ray” style painting; a drawing using scratch art paper. Then we did our “Dot painting” techniques on brown butcher paper to represent the “Bark” painting style. Next, we studied Australian symbols and created our own symbols based on our featured animals which is our version of what is known as a “Dreaming”. We incorporated our hands in an Australian “cave” painting technique. (This mixed media project idea & set up was inspired by an Australian art website, Zartart.com)
The entire nine weeks of art class has been dedicated to this continent and its culture as it relates to art. During our study, students kept a visual learning log that is a collection of notes based on the geography, beliefs and customs and, most importantly, the indigenous animals of Australia that we used as the subject matter for our paintings. For the cross curricular aspect, I asked our classroom teachers to partner up to help us write a short story about our indigenous animal. The story was the last creative step and adds the perfectly, unique touch that frames our art. Parents were also involved and had to complete their “homework” assignment for students to bring in and share about their own family culture. THIS was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about their family and their friends in our community. This helped me to learn more about my little artists too!! I loved reading everyone's parent homework! Big thanks to all of our parents for sharing these awesome details...

2nd GRADE ART

I AIN'T GONNA PAINT NO MORE!
Inspired by a creative story, I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More, by Karen Beaumont, and influenced by famous artist, Edvard Munch’s painting, The Scream, students delighted in the
creation of the first self-portrait of the year. I was inspired by a fellow blogger for this project, especially when I saw she had the students "blow paint" the hair of the project. I knew the students would love it!
Following step by step, students penciled in and utilized proper guidelines to place facial features proportionately correct in their “screaming” portrait. Students discovered how to draw their portrait in a non-typical fashion, in full detail with an open mouth, thus, visually expressing themselves as a screaming person. Students colored and used a straw to "blow paint" the hair in all their creative crazy directions, then carefully outlined the paint to enhance the colors.

Producing/Performing (4PR): The student demonstrates flexibility in his/her creative process and use of art materials (ie, a straw to blow paint, instead of a paint brush)

Responding/Reflecting (5RE): The student visually describes and demonstrates how an artist uses the elements and principles of design to create expressive impact in a work of art. (Famous Artist: Expressionist, Edvard Munch’s, “The Scream”)

Craftsmanship: Following a step by step drawing procedure, the student drew, colored with oil pastels, and blow painted with a straw neatly, demonstrating proper control and coordination of art materials.

ART Fills You Up Cups 2nd Grade

Hartville Elementary 2nd Grade Artists Review and Explore Color Theory

Little artists began the year in art class by reviewing color theory. I reviewed the color wheel, color blending of primary and secondary colors and creating a “tint” (when you add white to a color it can get lighter and lighter.)Then I introduced the theme of “Art Fills You Up!” (I borrowed this adorable idea from a fellow blogger @ spaldingart.blogspot.com~ BIG THANKS!!)asked the students what they thought this quote might mean...
A few of the student responses were:
I think it means that I can put a lot of art in a cup.”
It means decorate your cup with art?” and
I think it sounds like that song red solo cup.”

Students really did a wonderful job practicing their drawing skills the first week, then paintings skills to practice color blending and tints. Artists created these artworks based on their imagination and observation of familiar objects and scenes from their daily experiences and the environment.

ELEC and FRIENDS ANTI-BULLYING ART ASSEMBLY Lake Elementary

On May 7th students in Kindergarten to fifth at Lake and Hartville Elementary schools were awed by the powerful presence of Elec and Friends and our anti-bullying assembly. This entire year of art classes have been dedicated to learning about other cultures around the world through our art theme: ART BEYOND BORDERS. In addition, our focus has been learning about tolerance, respect and acceptance; about doing what you can with your own two hands to make this world a better place. This performance was made possible through our Lake Elementary and Arts In Stark SmARTs Partnership with funds from their annual arts campaign. We wish to thank our wonderful friends at Arts In Stark and our amazing administration for helping us find the funds to bring these awesome events, projects and experiences to our art students.

At the beginning of the assembly, students watched Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's music video, My Own Two Hands. This set the tone for Elec and Friends Anti-bullying performance. Elec Simon hails from Canton and has performed live with the Off Broadway show, STOMP for several years. He also performs for many of the First Friday events in Canton, Ohio. After introducing himself and his mission, Elec began by sharing a very tragic and personal story of the loss of his best friend at the age of eleven due to being bullied. Students and teachers watched as Mr. Elec and his band demonstrated that "NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR MUSIC!"

Elec performed his drumbeats all over the gymnasium and even on a pair of crutches...

Students were big fans of the show!

Mrs. Susa, Miss Stegner with Elec and Friends. These guys are truly amazing and have a strong message for students of all ages.

Lanterns created by 4th grade project: "LET YOUR INNER LIGHT SHINE" Students used a blue print, and discovered the differences between Form and Function in art. Student lanterns lined the entire entry hall to the gym, lighting their creative ways to the performance.
