Sea Turtles

             4^th Grade artists studied sea turtles as our inspiration for this project. Turtles are regularly incorporated into human culture, with painters, photographers, poets, songwriters, and sculptors using them as subjects. They also have an important role in mythologies around the world. Sea turtles are used as symbols of the marine environment and environmentalism. As a result of its role as a slow, peaceful creature in culture, the turtle can be misconceived as a sedentary animal; however, many types of turtle, especially sea turtles, frequently migrate over large distances in oceans.

           Students utilized elements of art to create an authentic illustration of a turtle filled with lines, shapes, colors, and textures. Using sensory details to visually describe expressive elements in their artwork (form, rhythm, and movement), artists were able to relate concepts common to the arts and disciplines outside the arts (pattern, repetition, composition, and variety) to create a unique design on their turtle illustration.
